IN YOUR READING for tonight, Norman Klein writes about how downtown L.A. in particular is often used metaphorically in films. I was able to find the opening sequence of this film, Criss Cross (1948) on YouTube, which opens with a really shaky helicopter shot over L.A. which looks like a quaint little village compared to what you see in the Michael Mann clip from Heat.
And this? This is downtown nightlife before the art walk, etc. Looks fun.
